The previously enacted New York City 2025 Electrical Code will take full effect on December 21, 2025. Also known as Local Law 128 of 2024, the 2025 Electrical Code adopts the standards of the 2020 National Electrical Code. Recognizing that New York City presents challenges that are unique, the 2025 Electrical Code also allows for some variance from the National Electric Code.
The 2025 Electric Code also includes amendments to the licensing, permitting and enforcement standards for the electrician trade so that they are more consistent with standards for other Department of Buildings-licensed trades. Additionally, a “qualified” person” would be allowed to conduct low-voltage work.
We recommend that owners and architects review the new legislation before December 21 to ensure compliance.
