The New York City Council recently approved Intro 436-A, legislation aimed at updating the City’s Electrical Code. The measure was passed unanimously. Here are some of the changes that will be implemented:
- The City’s Electrical Code will be updated to comply with the standards of the 2020 National Electrical Code. Certain “unique conditions” will be covered by amendments.
- The City’s Electrical Code will be incorporated into the City’s Construction Codes under Title 28 of the Administrative Code.
- The regulation of the electrician trade, including licensing, permitting, and enforcement, will be made consistent with the standards for other trades that are licensed by the City’s Department of Buildings.
- The quorum requirement for the Electrician License Board will be removed.
- A “qualified person,” as defined by the National Electrical Code, will be allowed to perform low-voltage work.
- The due date of the Local Law 55 electric vehicle charging report will be June 30, 2026.
This will be the first update to the City’s Electrical Code since 2011. If you have questions about the changes or how they will impact your property, contact us.
