Twenty-nine people in New York City died by fire between January 1 and April 16. This is an increase from the same period in 2025. Of the 29 fatalities, 31% died by fires caused by electrical issues.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) wants to reduce the number of fire deaths, so they recently released a new Public Service video about electrical safety.
The most important tips for avoiding electrical fires are ones that sound obvious, but are often things we overlook when we’re pressed for time or juggling multiple priorities. It’s worth reviewing these every so often so they stay top-of-mind:
- Never overload power strips or extension cords.
- Don’t keep or use frayed wires.
- Plug large appliances directly into wall outlets, not extension cords.
- Make sure you have both working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
