City-Owned Sidewalk Shed Removed After 15 Years

City-Owned Sidewalk Shed Removed After 15 Years

The oldest sidewalk shed at a city-owned property has finally been removed. For over 15 years, 329 linear feet of sidewalk shed had fronted the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) at 520 First Avenue in Kips Bay. Part of the “Get Sheds Down” plan, the removal provides a good opportunity to review some sidewalk shed basics.

When is a sidewalk shed needed?

Sidewalk sheds are required when:

  • There will be a scaffold, mast climber, or chute;
  • A new building is being constructed that is greater than 40 ft;
  • A building façade over 40 ft above curb level is being altered or repaired; or
  • A structure over 25 ft is being fully or partially demolished.

How long do sidewalk sheds need to be in place?

Sidewalk sheds must stay in place until a building is fully enclosed and all exterior work is completed.

There are some exceptions to the above requirements. If you have concerns about specific projects please contact us.
