If you have been rushing to file construction applications before the date the 2025 NYC Energy Conservation Code (NYCECC) goes into effect, we have some good news for you: you’re likely in good shape. The New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) announced last week that the NYCECC is anticipated to go into effect on March 30, 2026.
Because the NYCECC follows the New York State ECC (NYSECC), it was assumed that the effective dates would be the same. NYSECC became effective on December 31, 2025, but the NYCECC compliance date will be March 30, 2026. This is an “anticipated” compliance date, meaning it could be moved out further into the future but is not expected to be moved up to an earlier date. The 2020 NYCECC will remain in effect until the 2025 NYCECC compliance date.
Which Version of the Code Do I Need to Follow?

| New project job filings filed on or after March 30, 2026 | 2025 NYCECC |
| Prior projects with complete energy submissions filed before March 30, 2026 | 2020 NYCECC |
| Prior projects with complete energy submissions filed after March 30, 2026 | 2025 NYCECC |
| Job filings submitted before March 30, 2026 with an incomplete energy analysis | 2025 NYCECC |
| Prior jobs that undergo a material compliance change after March 30, 2026 | 2025 NYCECC |
